I work as an active strategic partner, not a passive non-executive — aligned to the outcomes that matter: top-line growth, successful M&A and an enhanced exit. The proposition is enterprise value creation, not the sale of days.
A commercial operator, not a conventional adviser.
Darren Watkins CEng BEng (Hons) spent over a decade on the executive team at VIRTUS Data Centres — Managing Director, then Chief Revenue Officer and Deputy CEO — through its journey from two-site challenger to the UK's largest data centre operator, including expansion into Germany and growth towards 1GW of capacity.
Before that came 20+ years in telecoms and managed services — BT, MFS WorldCom, Level 3, Attenda, COLT and euNetworks — building the optical, dark fibre and low-latency networks beneath the digital economy. It began with a commission as a graduate engineering officer in the RAF, launching satellites in partnership with the United States Air Force.
The result is a rare combination of commercial strategy and hands-on execution: I have personally negotiated with the world's largest cloud providers, operators, landowners, investors and infrastructure partners — on the customer side of the market. I write publicly about resilience and high performance at the One Percent Protocol.
A vantage point across the whole stack.
Data centres are where my work is centred — but the constraints that now define them are set elsewhere: in the networks that feed them, and increasingly in orbit. Very few people have operated at senior level across all three. I have.
GPUs are advancing faster than the networks that feed them, making low-latency optical connectivity one of the scarcest commodities in digital infrastructure. Power and planning now set the pace of every European build. And as terrestrial constraints bite, orbital and subsea infrastructure is moving from adjacent curiosity into the same capital conversation.
For the boards and investors I work with, that breadth matters for one reason: it means the advice accounts for the constraints sitting outside the data hall — before they show up in the business plan.
